Reminder: Add Day is Approaching
Just a friendly reminder that the last day for adding courses and removing incompletes is this Wednesday, January 24th. Please remember to bring your add cards to the Registrar's Office by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Registrar's Office will be open during the lunch hour to process cards.
What Signatures are Required on an Add Card?
You always need your adviser's signature.
You may drop a course without the instructor's signature, prior to add day. Again, your adviser must sign the drop card.
To add a course the instructor and your adviser must sign the add card. If you are trying to add a course that has a time conflict, there is a special add card that requires the signatures of both instructors for the two classes that conflict.
Can I get the Deans' signature in place of my adviser or instructor?
Only if your adviser is away for an extended period of time. (Sabbatical, vacations, or if it is impossible to get your adviser's signature, etc.) The Deans can not sign for your instructor. If the instructor is not available for a signature, the Registrar will accept a copy of an e-mail from the instructor indicating the desired pproval.
Welcome to our new Registrar
We are pleased to have Christy Lee Salinas now at Caltech as the Registrar. Christy was previously the senior associate registrar at Merrimack College in North Andover, Massachusetts and joined Caltech December 1st.
As Caltech's registrar, Salinas will lead the Institute's central operation for maintaining academic and student information, supporting an institutional focus on student success and excellence in teaching, learning, and research. The specific responsibilities of the Office of the Registrar include overseeing registration, recording grades, producing academic transcripts, certifying student enrollment status and completion of degrees, verifying athletic eligibility, scheduling courses and classroom space, and coordinating all aspects of graduation.
Salinas has nearly a dozen years of experience managing student academic records, class scheduling, and degree auditing, among other duties. Before beginning at Merrimack in 2015, Salinas worked as an associate registrar at Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She has bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of North Texas and is completing a master's degree in educational leadership and policy studies, with a concentration in higher education administration, from Boston University.
"I very much look forward to working with and supporting the Caltech community," says Salinas.

Excellent TAs from Fall Term
We'd like to congratulate and recognize a couple of outstanding TAs from the past quarter:
Sophia Charan, TA for ChE152 - Sophia is a G2 in chemical engineering. Students appreciated all the commitment Sophia put into the course as the only TA, staying late after recitations, grading assignments quickly, and being available for clarifications '24/7'. One student noted that Sopia 'did not simply provide answers but tried pointing students in the right direction to be able to come up with the answer themselves.' Many of the ChE152 students attributed their success in the course to Sophia's assistance.
Joaquin Garcia Suarez, TA for AM/CE 151A - Joaquin is a G3 in areonautics who was recognized by many in the class as being a fantastic TA. Many students appreciated how well prepared Joaquin always was and fully involved in the course. According to one student, 'Joaquin is a natural teacher, with a deep understanding of the material and a knack for elucidating complexity.'
Thanks, Sophia and Joaquin, for making a difference in the academic lives of our students. We appreciate all the time, effort and enthusiasm you put into your work with students.
